Frequently asked questions

Where should a beginner start?
Start with “What Is Karate?” and the beginner’s guide for what to expect, then browse the belts and your first kata (Heian Shodan). Most of all, visit a local dojo and try a class.
What are the three K’s of karate?
Kihon (basics drilled solo), kata (choreographed forms) and kumite (sparring with a partner) — the three pillars that every traditional karate class is built from.
What style of karate is this site about?
KarateDecoded is Shotokan-focused — the most widely practised style — but much of the material (styles, kumite, kihon, belts, terminology) applies across karate generally.
