Two accounts circulate. The popular dojo interpretation reads the kanji 押忍 as “osu” (push) + “shinobu” (endure) — “push and endure,” i.e. persevere under pressure. This meaning is promoted especially in Kyokushin. But this is a retrofitted reading, not a proven derivation.
The more historically credible origin is a contraction of a polite greeting — either Ohayō gozaimasu (good morning) or Onegaishimasu (please/let’s train) — clipped down to “Osu,” traceable to early-20th-century Japanese military academies and university clubs.
