Bunkai
Full move-by-move applications for the foundation kata, each giving two honest readings — the standard JKA-literal block-then-counter and the practical grab/trap/throw interpretation:
More kata guides are being added. Every kata page also includes a sample-bunkai section as a starting point.
Throughout these guides we separate two ways of reading the same movement. The standard / JKA-literal reading — the version in Nakayama’s Best Karate and most JKA-lineage dojos — treats each motion as a clean block followed by a counter. The practical / applied reading — associated with Iain Abernethy and the pragmatic-bunkai movement, building on Motobu and Okinawan Naihanchi teaching — treats the same motion as clearing, grabbing, off-balancing or throwing a single attacker in front of you.
Neither is “correct.” The literal version is the exam standard and teaches clean mechanics; the applied version is closer to a real encounter. Training both is what makes bunkai valuable.
