Karate training
Kihon is the category of fundamental building blocks, usually drilled solo, in unison, moving up and down the dojo in lines:
The emphasis is on stance, posture, hikite (the pulling hand), hip rotation, breathing and kime (focus) — often combined into short combinations (renraku-waza).
Kihon is the first pillar and the foundation of the triad kihon → kata → kumite. You perfect individual techniques solo (kihon); those techniques are arranged into patterns against imagined opponents (kata); and finally applied live against a partner (kumite). Nothing in kata or kumite works if the underlying kihon is weak — which is why beginners spend so long on it and even senior grades keep drilling it.
Kihon appears on every grading, from the first belt test upward: it is usually the opening section of a Shotokan exam, growing more complex with rank.
